🪸 A giant and healthy Porites cylindrica coral colony was discovered in the lagoon of @makunuduisland.
The biology team, with the help of the diving team managed to take and record measurements 📐: it turned out this remarkable coral has a perimeter of 23 meters and a diameter of 7 meters!
With the aim of building a 3D model to monitor and study the coral over time, a 3D reconstruction video through Structure from Motion Photogrammetry was created thanks to the the team’s enthusiasm and a remote guidance and collaboration from our team.
An underwater camera, a few minutes of a systematically taken video, and a giant coral: these are the ingredients for realising a 3D model of a Giant Coral. This approach opens the door for anyone – not just experts – to actively contribute to research and conservation initiatives. The work done with Makunudu’s team represents a significant example of collaboration that we hope will be followed by many.
