North Indian Ocean

A giant Pavona clavus from the Lakshadweep

India’s coral reefs may be less internationally recognised, but they hold valuable marine treasures—including giant corals.

In the northern part of the Indian Ocean, in the Arabian Sea, lies the archipelago of Lakshadweep: 36 tropical islands surrounded by remarkable reefs.

After receiving so many entries from the Maldives, just a few degrees south of Lakshadweep, we started wondering when an entry from this archipelago would arrive. Just a few weeks ago, the team from the REEF (Research and Environmental Education Foundation) made our wish come true, reporting a very large 𝘗𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘯𝘢 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘶𝘴: 80 m wide, 50 m long and 2.8 m high — just short of the size of a football pitch! 🪸

Another giant coral added to the Map the Giants database, and another reminder of how much there is still to discover beneath the surface. 🌊
