Map the Giants visits Coco Collection

Giant Corals and Citizen Science at Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu

As part of the collaboration between the University of Milano-Bicocca and Coco Collection, Map the Giants team visited Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu 🏝

πŸͺΈ During the visit, Map the Giants was officially presented to the resort, since Coco Collection has been supporting the project from its launch earlier this year.

The visit was aimed at exploring some of the reefs in Baa Atoll on a mission to discover, study, and protect the largest coral colonies in the Maldives.
A site survey with the marine team was conducted on the house reef to confirm the presence of a Giant coral colony on the island’s main snorkelling point. A dedicated snorkelling excursion looking for Giant corals in the surrounding reefs identified possible additional colonies.

Map the Giants was also presented both to Guests and staff members with a special edition of the Marine presentation, highlighting the importance of citizen science to Coco Palm’s enthusiastic guests, followed by a presentation at the staff to raise awareness on the beauty and fragility of coral reefs and the role of the Map the Giants project to protect them
