📢 NEW MONUMENTAL CORAL
A giant colony of 𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴, 30 meters in circumference, 8 meters wide and 5 meters high has been reported from Noonu Atoll, Maldives. Sitting at a depth of 11m, it was found on the 17th of March 2024.
This monumental coral is fully alive and belongs to one of the slowest growing coral species: it is very likely a centennial giant coral.
Map the Giants has a new monumental coral to study and protect thanks to Cecilia Maccanti. Cecilia, working as marine biologist in Noonu Atoll, bumped into this very large coral colony of 𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴 sp. during a dive and reported it to us through our website providing unique data for our citizen science project.
Citizen Science is one of the best approaches to gather data on a large scale and this is one of the methods we are using to locate the giants in the Maldives. Thanks Cecilia!
