A new Giant Coral from the Maldives

A giant Porites coral was reported from Noonu Atoll

๐Ÿ“ข NEWย MONUMENTAL CORAL

A giant colony ofย  ๐˜—๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, 30 meters in circumference, 8 meters wide and 5 meters high has been reported from Noonu Atoll, Maldives. Sitting at a depth of 11m, it was found on the 17th of March 2024.

This monumental coral is fully alive and belongs to one of the slowest growing coral species: it is very likely a centennial giant coral.

Map the Giants has a new monumental coral to study and protect thanks to Cecilia Maccanti.ย Cecilia, working as marine biologist in Noonu Atoll, bumped into this very large coral colony ofย ๐˜—๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ดย sp. during a dive and reported it to us through our website providing uniqueย data for our citizen science project.
Citizen Science is one of the best approaches to gather data on a large scale and this is one of the methods we are using to locate the giants in the Maldives. Thanksย Cecilia!
