A very large Galaxea

This huge ๐Ÿชธ ๐˜Ž๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜น๐˜ฆ๐˜ข ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ข was reported by Ocean Gardener Vincent Chalias and his team in December 2024ย  from Indonesia ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ. The colony measures an astounding 143m in perimeter and stretches from 4m of depth to 14m of depth for a maximum horizontal length of 71m ๐Ÿ˜ฎ. Given its complex growth form and its extension, it creates a perfect habitat for numerous other organisms that find shelter amongst its structures ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿฆ€.
What an incredible discovery from our Indonesian supporters. Thanks for sharing with the entire marine community the wonders of our ocean.

Thank you Ocean Gardener for your valuable contributions to Map the Giants and to the conservation of coral reefs in general!

A giant Porites from Indonesia

Sometimes submissions contain few, yet key information. It may happen that divers discover a giant coral colony during a dive in a location they only visit once. The data they provide are anyways valuable for our database. Visual estimation, might not be precise, but multiple photos of the colony and an “object” of known size within the photo, helps validating the entry as a giant.
This submission arrives from Indonesia ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ. The colony has been visually estimated to be 8m in the longest dimension and roughly 4m in height. A beauty that we would love to get to know more.

We are glad to announce thatย @indonesiabirufoundationย will be supporting Map the Giants in our mission to locate, study and protect giant centennial coral colonies.
๐ŸชธTheir key location in the Coral Triangle and their mission to research, restore and raise awareness places them in a great position to help us in this project.
They have already submitted a giant, so stay tuned to see what it looks like.

We look forward to many more giants coming from their area and to work together to protect our ocean.
